Pet Loss
The loss of a pet is not generally recognized as impactful as the loss of a person. What is overlooked in this comparison is the connection experienced by the bereaved person. There are instances where the loss of a companion animal hits harder than the loss of a family member. The reason for this is the profundity of the bond. The connection experienced and cherished by the bereaved pet owner.

Similarities
While loss is a universal experience, grief ensuing from the loss is highly individual. Pick up any book on loss and grief and pet owners will recognize the reactions described in the book as their own experience after their loss of their precious pet. From feelings of numbness to the first signs of hope and acceptance, the grief reactions are identical.

Differences
Any pet owner can tell you that the relationship with their pet is special. Most pet owners have a strong emotional bond with their pet adding to their feeling of wellbeing. Pets are also known to lower anxiety, reduce stress, combat loneliness. A pet is also known to promote connection, physical health, protection and a feeling of safety.

Grief is normal, natural, and necessary after the loss of a pet
Just as with a person we loved, the grief we experience over a lost pet is normal, natural and necessary. Because we loved we will grieve. Grieving is necessary. While pet bereavement is not socially recognized, it is necessary to take the time to grieve our pet. Not doing so will catch up with us at some later date.

Pet loss grief counseling
In grief therapy for pet loss, issues of guilt, regret, loneliness, and anxiety are often mentioned by pet owners. The intensity of these feelings can be baffling to the bereaved pet owner, but is in essence evidence of the close relationship held with the pet. Pets can be very responsive to their owner's emotions and moods and can offer solace with their loving presence. Their absence is therefore keenly felt as their love is/was unconditional.
Pet bereavement is not socially recognized
There is a general lack of understanding of the impact of pet loss on owners among family and friends. If this is you, please reach out to me. I have a pet loss grief coaching certification and have lost my very own Skippy. She was a character! Yes, our pets have personalities!
