When you are struggling physically, emotionally, socially, mentally, or spiritually, know that there are some simple strategies that may help you cope with the loss of a loved one or a beloved pet.


Physical - Take good care of your body.

  • Get enough sleep, but do not oversleep.

  • Exercise, a simple walk will do and will help clear your mind.

  • Spend time in nature, listen to the birds, and feel yourself relax.

  • Eat healthy foods - avoid empty calories.

  • Drink plenty of water - minimize alcohol.

  • Play with your pet - if you lost your pet, visit and play with a friend's pet.


Emotional - Be gentle with yourself.

  • Cry when you feel tears welling up - a good cry releases pent-up emotions and stress.

  • When anger crops up, find an activity where you can expend this energy.

  • Be tolerant of perceived deficiencies in yourself.

  • Surround yourself with calming things, such as, gentle music, pets, and plants.

  • Give yourself a break from grieving once in a while. Engage in an enjoyable activity.


Mental - Your mind is your friend.

  • Focus on one thing at a time.

  • Make a reasonable to-do list and be proud of your accomplishments.

  • Mentally allow yourself to go at a slower pace.

  • Give your mind a break and engage in meditation.

  • Read an uplifting book.

  • Play some music or your music instrument.

  • Do deep breathing (tummy breathing), it will immediately relax and clear your mind.


Social - We are all social animals.

  • Allow friends to help you.

  • Help someone else - it will make you feel good.

  • Seek out a support group.

  • Seek connection with uplifting friends.

  • Simplify your life style.

  • Read grief literature to learn about others' experience with loss.


Spiritual - Nurture your spirit.

  • Meditate and pray.

  • Stay true to your values.

  • Focus on what really matters in your life.

  • Write in your journal.
